A unique museum in the world


Archives, iconography, tools and masterpieces of the companions of the Tour de France since 1840, the Musée du Compagnonnage in Tours is a unique museum in the world!

Municipal and classified as a « Musée de France », the Musée du Compagnonnage is housed in the monks' dormitory and in the hospitality room of the former Saint-Julien Abbey in Tours and presents exceptional collections. Collective masterpieces from the 19th century, masterpieces of patience, the masterpieces that are executed for the reception, but also the attributes of the Compagnons (canes, gourds, colours), souvenir paintings, tools, archives, the traditions and works of the Compagnons of the Tour de France, from their origins to the present day are represented.

Visit the Musée du Compagnonnage entirely dedicated to the Compagnonnage companies such as the Compagnons du Devoir workers' association. The museum houses a rich collection of masterpieces as well as the companionship attributes, souvenirs, historical and varied archives of the journeymen carpenters, roofers, stonemasons, carpenters, locksmiths, shoemakers, boot makers.

On your journey, you will find all the current or disappeared trades of the Compagnonnage from the building trades, leather, iron to the food trades.

Periodic events, exhibitions, themed tours and activities for children are offered at the museum.

The Compagnonnage is listed by UNESCO as part of the intangible cultural heritage of humanity.

  • Open every day, except Tuesdays, from 16/09 to 15/06, from 9am to 12:30pm and from 2pm to 6pm.
  • Closed on 1 January, 1 May, 14 July, 1 November, 11 November, 25 December.
